Bio

Contemporary composer and pianist Nathan Shubert (they/them), originally from Canada and now based in Berlin, writes music that merges felted piano, minimalism, and a quiet, observational sense of intimacy. Their work is shaped by subtle details—creaking wood, pedal noise, soft hammers—and an approach that treats the piano as both a musical and physical landscape.

Their new album Iso (2025), recorded with an eleven-microphone setup on their home upright piano, captures every nuance of the instrument to reveal an unvarnished portrait of presence, vulnerability, and emotional clarity. Iso follows their acclaimed third album The Moon From Here (2022), which completed a trilogy exploring loss, quiet transformation, and the search for stability during years of upheaval.

Now rooted in Berlin's modern classical community, Shubert continues to perform across Europe, bringing a deeply personal, sensory-aware approach to contemporary piano music. Full bio →

Press quotes

  • Nathan's music is a world that exists within itself, with songs such as "When You Take Your Shoes Off" capturing a feeling of yearning through the sounds of water, a car alarm ringing out somewhere in the distance, and an impending storm. Their music is intensely immersive and builds an atmosphere where we're not invited just to listen, but to exist.

    Groove Magazine · 2025
  • Iso ranked #17 in Top 50 Experimental/Ambient/Modern Classical albums.

  • The pieces follow a path through ambient music like a flowing body of water that gently skirts the neoclassical nuances. Emotional tones with a wide spectrum is the premise on the album, which is very dynamic and multi-layered.

Gezeitenstrom · The Moon From Here
  • When You Take Off Your Shoes is a pleasure to experience, a beautiful example of how to work hard without the results sounding over-worked – and a testament to Shubert's dedication to the contemporary classical music scene.

  • Equally poignant and playful, it is an absolutely impeccable collection of vignettes, sketches, & interludes.

  • By the time it is over, you feel like you have spent time in the company of a close friend.

  • Think of Nathan Shubert as the West Coast version of Jean-Michel Blais.

    CHUO 89.1 · 2019
  • Deceptively simple repetitive structures revealing an increasingly complex and seductive musicality.

  • It's not comfort music, but it is comforting music, warm and empathic throughout, allowing you to go on whatever journeys your mind takes you on while you listen to it.

  • There's an appealing subtlety to Folds, a muted chain of pieces that wavers between improvisation and a feeling of familiarity.

  • It seemed like these songs had always been playing somewhere and had just then surfaced into earshot.
