Field Recording
Field recording has become an essential part of my artistic practice—a form of meditation and a way to document the world. Inspired by The Soundscape by R. Murray Schafer, I'm always recording the sounds around me, whether at home or travelling on tour. I love capturing sounds that give a sense of place, tell a story, and transport listeners into that moment.
With binaural 360° sound and precise geotagging, I've built an extensive catalogue of immersive recordings from all over the globe. Some have made their way into my music; others take the spotlight in my Field Recordings LP series—a different way of presenting field recordings as narrative albums. Gathering field recordings became symbiotic with composing: the two practices inform each other.
In albums
When You Take Off Your Shoes (2019) weaves field recordings from New York City, Weaverville NC, Petit Jean AR, Lake Santeetlah NC, and Portland OR into the piano compositions—locations that shaped the album's sense of movement and memory.
On Iso (2025), In Evenings, Loose Formation draws inspiration from Vancouver crow migrations at sunset—the murmuration of thousands of birds returning to their roost, captured in the piece's shifting textures.
Field Recordings album series
Vol. 1 (2019) documents a four-week trip across Europe: Stockholm, London, Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Copenhagen, and Reykjavík. Vol. 2 (2021) collects 18 Vancouver and Banff location recordings from the pandemic era—Granville Island, Iona Jetty, health-worker cheers, Lighthouse Park, Lake Louise, and more.
I'm excited to eventually open my full catalogue to the public and enjoy collaborating with other artists to bring field recordings into their work.
